Summer Cubs - Catapults

We carry on meeting during the Summer Holidays. We don't wear uniform, we stay later than usual because we don't have to go to school next day, and we try to be outside all the time.

One of the things we did during Summer Cubs is make giant catapults, and used them to have a water battle.

Click on the photos if you want to see them bigger.

First you have to learn how to tie a really tight square lashing, using sisal.

Square Lashings
Using broomsticks

Then you can make the frame of the catapult using broomsticks held together with square lashings.

To work out how the frame goes together, there's a little model of the catapult made out of drinking straws.

Using the model
Catapult finished

And when the frame is finished you tie on the catapult elastic.

We use real catapult elastic, tied to a piece of rubber to hold the projectile.

When the catapult is finished it looks like this.

Each team had a base for their catapult. The base is marked on the ground in chalk.

For ammunition we used sponge balls soaked in water.

You get a point for every shot that lands in your opponent's base. Or hits an opponent.

Fire . . .
Battle rages

Then it was time for the battle.

Looks like a lot of incoming shots on target!

And the catapult is starting to come untied - the square lashings have to be very tight if they are going to last for the whole battle!

On target
Probably the winners

So the winning team is . . .
